    Historical Note

    The Hoover Street Commune was created to be the headquarters of the Los Angeles Gay Liberation Front, beginning in 1970. Located at the corner of Sunset Place and North Hoover Street in the Silver Lake neighborhood, the house was the site of GLF's weekly meetings. Williams, Don Kilhefner, Tony De Rosa, Lee Helfin, and Ray Powers were some of the core members who lived in the house, or were there on a daily basis. The Hoover Street Commune became inactive in 1971.

    Scope and Contents

    The collection comprises a manuscript and accompanying CD-ROM, and seven photographs from a 1971 issue of Life Magazine documenting Stan Williams and the Hoover Street Commune, a communal residence for core activists from the Los Angeles Gay Liberation Front. The manuscript, written by Williams, and CD-ROM includes annotated photographs and digital audio files describing Williams' experience in the Hoover Street Commune, which was active from 1970-1971.
