Abstract: This collection consists of artist files and exhibition research notes compiled by Alfred C. Harrison, Jr., owner and President
of the North Point Gallery from 1985-2021. The Gallery specialized in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American and
European art, with an emphasis on early California art.

Biography/Administrative History
The North Point Gallery, founded by UC Davis Professor Joseph A. Baird, Jr. in 1972, was originally located at 872 North Point
Street in San Francisco. In 1985, following Dr. Baird's retirement, art historian and author Alfred C. Harrison, Jr. assumed
ownership. First relocated to 407 Jackson Street in San Francisco, the Gallery later moved to its final address at 2247 Fifth
Street in Berkeley. The archival collection was presented by Mr. Harrison to the Crocker Art Museum in February 2021 and
the North Point Gallery closed in March 2021, partly as a result of challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Scope and Content of Collection
The files of the North Point Gallery comprise news clippings, exhibition research notes, artists' biographies and ephemera
related to the activities of artists active in California from the mid-19th century through the mid-20th century. The extensive
historic news articles consist of art reporting and art criticism from numerous publications in San Francisco, Los Angeles,
New York, and Boston, arranged chronologically by individual artist. In total, the news items represent timelines of artistic
activity and document contemporary reception of early California artists and their work in the larger West and East Coast
urban milieus.
