Administrative/Biographical History

T. (Thomas) Sheridan Carey (5 July 1893 - 23 October 1969), M.D. (Stanford University, 1917), served from 1933-1939 as Chief Surgeon-Medical Officer for the Berdoo Camp Hospital, an air conditioned, 27-bed, class A industrial hospital with one assistant surgeon and fourteen male registered nurses. The hospital operated at Berdoo Camp, near Indio and Coachella, from 1933 to 1936, then moved to Banning from 1936 to 1939.

Scope and Contents

The collection of photographs, memoranda, programs, and reports documents medical activities at the Berdoo Camp Hospital, a facility in the Coachella Valley supporting construction of the Colorado River Aqueduct in California. Photographs include exterior and interior views of the building and its instrumentation and equipment, the director and staff of male nurses, ambulances, and some patients. Memoranda and reports to and from the Los Angeles offices of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. One folder contains medical case reports by Munford Smith, M.D., Medical Director of the Barlow Sanatorium in Los Angeles, concerning insurance claims by seven workers referred by the Berdoo Hospital with symptoms of tuberculosis.
