Box 1-7; Nitrate Storage

Series 1.  Steam merchant vessels, circa 1900-1925

Extent: 186 photographs (469 physical forms: 42 prints, 62 glass plate negatives, 121 preservation contact negatives, 121 nitrate negatives, 122 preservation contact interpositives, 1 document)

Scope and Content Note

Consists primarily of various views of CALIFORNIAN (built 1900; cargo vessel), LURLINE (built 1908; merchant vessel), and MANOA (built 1913; merchant vessel). Also includes other miscellaneous merchant vessels. Views show vessels in drydock, underway, and anchored. Also includes views on and below deck, often containing crew members and passengers. Some of the passenger photographs include women dressed in crew uniforms, sometimes while wearing fake mustaches and goatees.

Arranged into four subseries: 1.1 Californian (built 1900; cargo vessel); 1.2 Lurline (built 1908; merchant vessel); 1.3 Manoa (built 1913; merchant vessel); 1.4 Other merchant vessels.

Subseries 1.1.  Californian (built 1900; cargo vessel), 1900-1918

Extent: 30 photographs (41 physical forms: 10 prints, 30 glass plate negatives, 1 preservation contact interpositive)

Scope and Content Note

Consists of photographs related to CALIFORNIAN. Shows the vessel in drydock as well as wharfside. Views below deck show the engine room. Also includes general deck views as well as portraits of passengers and crew members on board.
Series 1.4, File Unit 3, which consists of unidentified views of merchant steamships, may contain additional views of CALIFORNIAN.
