Scope and Contents
The Kaye Briegel Chicano Publication Collection (1953-2014, bulk 1970-1980) consists of over 100 different title magazines,
newsletters, newspapers, and other publications related to Chicano movements, history, and culture. Some of the publications
featured in this collection include:
Regeneracion formally known as
Carta Editorial;
El Chicano; and
La Raza.
Biographical / Historical
Kaye Briegel, who was a lecturer of history at the California State University Long Beach, primarily assembled this collection
of Chicano materials.
Publications in this collection include:
-
El Chicano began in 1968 when the University of California received a grant from the Ford Foundation, and the first issue was published
later that year. In 1969 funding for the publication was pulled due to a political cartoon, but was picked up as an independent
press by its current owners, Gloria and Bill Harrison, along with Marta Macias Brown and Sam McQueen.
-
El Malcriado-The Voice of the Farmworker started when Cesar Chavez and Gilbert Padilla wanted to build a movement in 1962. It wasn't until 1964 that the original
idea to create the publication became a reality. Bill Esher, a New Yorker who moved to Oakland, helped create and distribute
the paper. The publication continued distribution until the early 1970s.
-
Regeneracion was a monthly magazine previous known as
Carta Editorial.
Regeneracion was published in Los Angeles until an undisclosed date and focused on issues of inequality, poverty, and war.
-
El Hispanoa legally adjudicated newspaper of general circulation in Sacramento County and throughout Northern California that was published
weekly, every Tuesday.
