    Biography

    Thomas Carlyle (4 December 1795 - 5 February 1881) was a Scottish philosopher, satirical writer, essayist, historian and teacher during the Victorian era. He called economics "the dismal science", wrote articles for the Edinburgh Encyclopedia, and became a controversial social commentator.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    This collection contains correspondence from Carlyle and his wife, Jane Welsh Carlyle to each other and friends; manuscripts & fragments by Carlyle; engravings. photographs, & paintings of Carlyle, and realia.

    Separated Material

    Books once in Carlyle's private library, an extensive library of works by and about the author, including first and variant editions as well as presentation and association copies have been cataloged separately and are available through UCSC's online catalog.
