Biography/Administrative History

Lions Club International was founded in 1917 as the Association of Lions Clubs by Chicago businessman Melvin Jones. By 1920 it had expanded into an international service organization. In 1987 that Lions Clubs International amended its bylaws to allow women to become members. Today it boasts 1.4 million members in over 47,000 clubs around the world. Membership is by invitation only. The Mill Valley Lions Club was organized in the early 1950s. Over the next several decades, the club organized and participated in a wide variety of service projects, fundraisers, and community events. In 1971, the Mill Valley Lions Club also spearheaded a year-long remodel of Scout Hall. The club accepted its first women member, Avril Couris, in 1990.
