Background

Scope and content:

The collection comprises 90 audio reels, primarily interviews by Judith Pearlman, accompanied by some transcriptions, translations, notes and printed matter. Also included are two videotapes of Bauhaus films and enhanced audiocassette tapes of the interviews.

The audio reels record interviews with masters, students, and others associated with of the Bauhaus in Germany. Interviewees include Anni Albers, Gertrud Arndt, Herbert Bayer, Max Bill, Roman Clemens, T. Lux Feininger, Max Gebhard, Ise Gropius, Larry Haase, Felix and Livia Klee, Georg Muche, Winfried Nerdinger, Tut and Jaina Schlemmer, Gunta Stölzl, and Andor and Eva Weininger. These interviews were assembled by Pearlman and her production company, Cliofilm, as both research and content for her documentary Bauhaus in America, as well as for an article written for the New York Times Magazine in 1983.

Ten reels record roughly 10 hours from the 50 Years Bauhaus conference and exhibition (1969) at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT).

Twenty files hold interview transcriptions and English translations, notes and research material about Anni Albers, Walter Allner, Gertrud Arndt, Max Bill, Roman Clemens, Howard Dearstyne, T. Lux Feininger, Ise Gropius, Werner Graeff, Peter Keler, Felix Klee, Jean Leppien, Hannes Meyer, Georg Muche, Winfried Nerdinger, Walter Puff, Konrad Püschel, Tut and Jaina Schlemmer, Gunta Stölzl, and Andor and Eva Weininger.

Judith Pearlman is the writer, producer and director of the 1995 documentary Bauhaus in America.

Collection was acquired from Judith Pearlman in 1992.
Processing information:

Papers and notes were rehoused by the Registrar upon receipt. Original media and reformatted copies were assigned numbers by Getty Research Institute staff to facilitate circulation and reformatting. Kit Messick wrote the finding aid in 2017.
