Collection Scope and Content

The James J. Jensen photograph collection, 1910-1920, (SAFR 24422, P14-002) is comprised mainly of photographs of James J. Jensen and views aboard AURORA (built 1902; barkentine, 4m). The collection has been processed to the Collection level and is open for use.
Contains photographs of James J. Jensen, his family, and friends aboard vessels and ashore, 1910-1920. There are 59 black-and-white photographic prints and postcards. Fifty of the photographs are mounted on thirteen black paper pages that were formerly part of a photograph album. Nine of the photographs are loose, of which six have pieces of black paper adhered to the back which suggests that they were previously mounted in this album or a different album.
The photographs were taken aboard AURORA (built 1902; barkentine, 4m) and other unidentified sailing vessels and steamships. James J. Jensen was a sailor on AURORA during a voyage in approximately 1917-1918. Some of the photographs in the collection might be from this voyage.
Jensen is photographed with his father, Hans Peter Jensen, aboard an unidentified vessel (Item 51), as well as with other people, possibly including his mother Augusta and his sister Mary, aboard AURORA likely while in port. Some photographs may also show Captain Alff Hansen, master of AURORA. There is one photograph of U.S. Navy sailor Preston Peterson aboard AURORA. Kathryn Asmussen and an unidentified man (possibly James J. Jensen) are photographed likely aboard AURORA (built 1902; barkentine, 4m) or SAMAR (built 1901; schooner, 4m) in Item 52. Kathryn was the daughter of Captain Marcus Asmussen, master of SAMAR.
Other photographs of vessels underway and docked are identified as JAMES JOHNSON (built 1901; barkentine, 4m), MCLAURIN (bark, 3m), and possibly WERNER VINNEN (built 1891; bark, 4m) and CHAMPIGNY (bark, 4m). Additional sailing and steamships are unidentified, including one photograph of a shipwrecked steam schooner. There are also photographs of men repairing sails and washing the deck of a sailing vessel (possibly AURORA) as well as photographs of a deck load of lumber and the deck awash.
One photograph is labeled as being taken in Seattle, Washington, but most other locations are unidentified. Several photographs show James J. Jensen, likely with his family, standing on a residential street with snow on the ground. The street is possibly located in Linnton, Oregon, where Jensen lived. Item 59 is a postcard of Linnton showing the Clark & Wilson Lumber Co. plant where Hans Peter Jensen was employed.
