Description
Items in the collection are related to the employment of John Medich with the Southern Pacific Railroad Company in the Sacramento Shops. Items include an employee card for Medich, group photographs of employees of the Southern Pacific Sacramento Shops from the 1950's, and three seniority lists for 1966-1969.
Background
John Medich was born on November 7, 1921 in Roseville, California. A son of immigrant parents from Split, Yugoslavia, Civit Medich and Lucy Zulium. He graduated from Roseville High School in 1939, and went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad as an apprentice machinist. His father, Civit, also worked for Southern Pacific; the 1930 census lists him as a Machinist Helper for Southern Pacific Railroad Co. Medich was drafted on Aug 10, 1942, and sent to Meridian, Mississippi and served in the 727th Railroad Battalion in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. After the war, Medich returned to Southern Pacific, where he worked for 41 years as machinist. Medich passed away December 5, 2016 in Sacramento, California.
