Series 1: Academia 1941-2008 1960-1993

Scope and Content

This series (1941-2008) includes material related to Boyer's occupation as a professor, including article and book chapter manuscripts; conference lectures, notes, and programs; UCLA graduate seminar lecture notes; research notes and data; employment paperwork from University of Minnesota and UCLA; professional societies and editorial materials; and photographs of him and his colleagues. This series also contains correspondence and co-authored drafts/notes relating to specific articles or chapters. In terms of UCLA material, the series documents Boyer's Directorship of the Molecular Biology Institute (MBI) at UCLA, the UC Program for Research and Training in Biotechnology (also called the Systemwide Biotechnology Research and Education Program), his involvement with other UCLA campus institutes, the proceedings of UCLA advisory committees he served on, and information regarding the proposed Veloway bicycle highway project near UCLA's campus in Westwood. For material related to the naming of Boyer Hall, the creation of the Paul Boyer Endowed Chair at UCLA, and the Boyer Postdoctoral Fellowships at UCLA, see series 3.

Subseries 1.3: Conferences 1967-2005 1970-2002

Scope and Content

Contains materials related to the numerous meetings and lectures that Paul Boyer attended from the 1960s to the 1990s. Most of the records pertain to research symposiums held by universities in the US as well as countries abroad such as Italy, Israel, South Africa, the Netherlands, and Thailand, to name a few. Conferences held by scientific societies such as the American Chemical Society (ACS), the American Society of Biological Chemists (ASBC, later the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or ASBMB), the European Bioenergetics Conference (EBEC), and the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) comprise the rest of the materials. Professor Boyer cites the Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) as having been particularly meaningful to him throughout his career. The GRC folders often contain group photos of conference attendees, comprising the majority of the collection's sparse photographic content. Some folders contain minimal information such as plane tickets and confirmation of attendance, although others have notes that Boyer took at those conferences as well as related correspondence.

Scope and Content

Contains a retrospective note from Boyer about his opposition to a proposal by UC Vice President Ronald W. Brady for the establishment of UC-affiliated technology transfer companies. The plan called for the establishment of the non-profit UC Technology Development Foundation (UCTDF) and the for-profit UC Technology Development Company, the latter with the stated intention of bolstering funds for biotechnology research. The proposal was met with heavy resistance from a number of faculty who were concerned that the plan would undermine the ethos of scientific progress and was ultimately turned down.

Series 2: Correspondence 1943-2009 1960-2000

Scope and Content

This series contains Boyer's general and research correspondence, which is virtually all professional in subject matter. Of major interest is correspondence delineating Boyer's research journey from his discoveries at the University of Minnesota, where he first began researching oxidative phosphorylation, to his eventual breakthrough on the binding change mechanism and rotational catalysis at UCLA in the 1970s. Correspondents Henry Lardy, David Green, Richard Cross, Nobelist Peter Mitchell, Richard Cross, Britton Chance, Efraim Racker, Kathryn LaNoue, and James Peter figure prominently in this series. For drafts with accompanying correspondence about specific articles, also see series 1.

Arrangement

This series keeps the distinction between "correspondence" and "research correspondence" from Boyer's original filing system; however, researchers should note that there are not tangible thematic differences between "research correspondence" and general "correspondence," as virtually all is research-related. Frequent correspondents with Boyer have their own folders titled under their name and are arranged alphabetically. Less frequent correspondents were filed under "miscellaneous authors" and categorized by year. Series of correspondence concerning particular topics were kept in their original arrangement and filed under "miscellaneous authors".

Scope and Content

Contains 2008 note from Boyer delineating the origins of some of the materials in this subseries, particularly for letters dating from the 1960s to 1980s with Peter Mitchell. Note explains that the original copies had been borrowed by Bruce Weber, who sent back the scans he made of the originals in 2006 at Boyer's request. However, during the processing period, many originals were found anyways despite claims of having "mysteriously disappeared", and a significant portion of these scans were removed from the collection.

Series 3: Awards & Donations 1951-2009 1980-2005

Scope and Content

This series contains material related to awards (including competitive funding from non-academic private institutions like the Guggenheim Foundation, and lectureships that function as awards like the Weizmann Lecture Series), and donations. Of particular interest are lectures, interviews, and correspondence relating to Boyer's 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (also see series 2), as well as material relating to Boyer's 1955 Guggenheim Fellowship, 1989 Rose Award, and 1998 Seaborg Medal. The series also contains material documenting his nominating of other scholars for these awards. In addition, it contains material relating to Boyer's donating of his Nobel Prize monies to create the Boyer Postdoctoral Fellowships at UCLA, University of Minnesota, and the University of Wisconsin, as well as material relating to the creation of the Paul Boyer Endowed Chair at UCLA and the naming of Boyer Hall on UCLA's campus in large part through contributions by James Peter (a former postdoc of Boyer's) and the Albert Parvin Foundation. For other UCLA-related material, see series 1 and 2.

Arrangement

Materials pertaining to "Awards" and "Nominations" are arranged in alphabetical order by name of the award. "Donations" and "Honorary Events" are sorted chronologically.

Scope and Content

This series contains material related to Boyer's government funding research grants, including those from the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), Department of Energy (DOE), Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA), National Science Foundation (NSF), and the United States Public Health Service (USPHS).

Arrangement

Materials in this series are arranged alphabetically, first by government organization (AEC, DOE, etc.), and then chronologically based on the requested grant period. The sponsored project titles are included in the labels of some of the folder; those without are a renewal of the previous project grant.
