John Charles Fremont was born in 1813 in Savannah, Georgia, and died in 1890 in New York City. Fremont was an officer in the
Topographical Corps of the U.S. Army and led an expedition along the Oregon Trail to the Rockies in 1842. In 1843, another
government expedition to him to California. His travels in Oregon and California resulted in the publication in 1845, of Report
of the Exploring Expedition to Oregon and North California. He entered into a private expedition in 1848-49, to find a route
for the railroad to California. He had many further military forays and exploring expeditions made him a popular pubic figure,
as well as a national political one. He became a wealthy man, and was named to the U.S. Senate for California for a short
term (Sept. 1850-March 1851). He was married to Jessie Benton, who was the daughter of Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri.
Fremont was a member of the Society of California Pioneers, joining in 1878. There is an abundance of further information
