Background
The San Diego Jewish Film Festival is sponsored by the Cultural Arts Committee of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. Founded by the Center's Cultural Arts Director, Lynette Allen and Festival Chair, Joyce Axelrod, it was conceived in 1984, starting with the showing of one film to a small group of people. In 1989 they arranged to have a group of films shown in Sherwood Hall at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. The official festival began in 1991. In over twenty years the festival has grown to be a major event for the San Diego Jewish Community, with many films shown over several weeks at various venues throughout San Diego County. Guest speakers involved with the production of the films and experts in the film topics give talks and lead discussions during the festival each year.
