Biography

Emilio Gino Segrè was born in 1905 in Tivoli, Italy. His father, Giuseppe, was a successful industrialist, and his mother, Amelia Treves, was the daughter of a prominent architect. He had two brothers, Angelo Marco and Marco Claudio. Segrè married Elfriede Spiro in 1936. They had three children, Claudio, Amelia Segrè Terkel, and Fausta Segrè Walsby. Elfriede died in 1970, and Segrè married Rosa Mines in 1972.
Segrè earned his Ph.D. under Enrico Fermi at the University of Rome. He was an assistant professor of physics there from 1932 to 1936, and was one of the Via Panisperna Boys, the group of young scientists led by Fermi. He directed the physics lab at the University of Palermo from 1936 to 1938. He was visiting California in the summer of 1938 when Benito Mussolini’s fascist government passed anti-Semitic laws that banned Jews from university teaching. Segrè, who was Jewish, became an indefinite émigré, and Ernest O. Lawrence offered him a job as a research assistant at the Berkeley Radiation Lab at the University of California. Segrè was a group leader for the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1943 to 1946, when he returned to the university at Berkeley. Emilio and Elfriede became naturalized citizens in 1944, and Segrè taught physics and history of science at Berkeley until his retirement in 1972.
While at Berkeley, Segrè helped discover the elements technetium and astatine, and the isotope plutonium-239, which was used to make the Fat Man nuclear bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki. Segrè and his colleague Owen Chamberlain were co-heads of the research group at the Lawrence Berkeley Radiation Lab that discovered the antiproton. The two were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1959 for that discovery. Segrè donated his photographs documenting people and events in the history of modern science to the American Institute of Physics, which named its photographic archive of the history of physics in his honor. Segrè died April 22, 1989 at the age of 84.

Scope and Content Note

This collection documents the personal and professional life of Nobel Prize-winning physicist and University of California, Berkeley professor, Emilio Segrè. Segrè corresponded with and worked alongside some of the most prominent physicists of his time, and his papers offer insights into the history of physics in the 20th Century. The collection spans his entire life, from his childhood, studies and early career in Italy, throughout his emigration to the United States, his career at Berkeley and Los Alamos, his retirement, his death, and his legacy. The collection is divided into nine series: Correspondence; Family Papers and Personalia; Enrico Fermi; Writings; Lawrence Berkeley Radiation Lab/Los Alamos National Laboratory; Administrative Materials; Course Materials; Works by Others; and Photographic Materials. Segrè’s original folder titles were retained in the language in which he wrote them. The collection is primarily in English and Italian, but there are also materials in French, German, and Russian.

Series 1. Correspondence 1929-1992

Physical Description: Cartons 1-14; Carton 15, folders 1-40; Carton 38, folders 1-4; Oversize folder 3B

Arrangement

Arranged alphabetically by correspondent, organization name, or subject matter.

Scope and Content Note

Consists of Segrè’s alphabetical files of personal and professional correspondence with individuals, organizations, and publishers. Includes correspondence with many of the most prominent physicists of the 20th Century and letters supporting the emigration of other European scientists. Segrè filed incoming and outgoing correspondence together, and letters often discuss both personal and professional matters. Folders may contain related information about the correspondents and his professional activities. Segrè’s filing was often inconsistent, but efforts were made to bring materials from and about the same people and institutions together. Please note that correspondence can be found in other series.

Physical Description: Carton 19, folders 37-50; Carton 20; Carton 21, folders 1-26; Carton 38, folders 27-34

Scope and Content Note

Consists of materials related to Segrè’s mentor, friend, and colleague, Enrico Fermi. The series includes correspondence with Fermi, his wife, Laura, and Enrico Persico; lectures and writings by Fermi; notes Segrè took in Fermi’s classes; materials related to patents they held together; and photocopies of materials Segrè donated to the Fermi archives at the University of Chicago. There are also files related to Laura Fermi’s book about her husband, "Atomi in Famiglia" ("Atoms in the Family"); and Segrè’s biography of Fermi, "Enrico Fermi: Fisico" ("Enrico Fermi: Physicist"). Files related to "Note e memorie" ("Collected Papers of Enrico Fermi") include preprints and reprints of Fermi’s work. Fermi kept very few reprints and manuscripts, and many were lost when he moved from Italy to the United States and within the States. Segrè assembled as complete a collection of reprints as he could to prepare Fermi’s collected papers, substituting photocopies from journals or books when necessary. Some of these are rare because they document Fermi’s early work in Italy, and are not included in "Note e Memorie."

Also includes Segrè’s autobiographical writings.
Materials related to "Nuclei and Particles" includes comments and notes, permissions, errata sheets, opuscoli, original art, materials regarding the NEC Pelletron Electron Accelerator, photographs, illustrations, manoscritti, copy editor's figure sheets, and galleys.
Materials related to "Personaggi e Scoperte nella Fisica Contemporanea" and "Personaggi e Scoperte nella Fisica Classica" include an annotated copy of "From X-Rays to Quarks: Modern Physicists and Their Discoveries"; recensione, piano per un volume 1, lists of illustrations, and corrections; drafts; materiale vivi; materiale relativo a figure e scarti; manuscripts; physics articles and illustrations; art, including deleted art; appendices; and reviews. Lessons and notes from Segrè’s lectures on the history of physics are here because it appears that he drew on them when writing his volumes on classical and modern physics. Please note that even though the published book is called “From Falling Bodies to Radio Waves,” many folders were labeled “From Falling Bodies to Electromagnetic Fields."
Segrè's autobiographical writings include drafts and notes in both Italian and English under a number of provisional titles. There is also correspondence, galleys, John Heilbron’s corrections, errata, and photographs. "Autobiografia di un Fisico" is the Italian edition of "A Mind Always in Motion."
