Gift of Leonard Scheller (1980). Accession number 1996.10.1-2.
Georges Rouault (1871-1958) was a French painter and a leader in the avant-garde school of Fauvism, which emphasized strong
colors and broad, evocative brushstrokes that rejected naturalism. He was also part of the Catholic Renewal and a friend of
the Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain, which was deeply reflected in his art.
This collection consists of two prints (numbers 11 and 56) from the French artist George Rouault's
Miserere series, which contains fifty-eight lithograpic prints in its entirety (the series had 450 editions printed). The titles
are
- No. 11: Tomorrow will be beatuiful, said the shipwrecked man.
- No. 56: In these dark times of vainglory and unbelief, Our of Land's End keeps vigil.
The prints are stored in one oversize box.
