Collection Scope and Contents Summary

This collection comprises papers of L.E. Cox and Brad Atwood, two of the first administrative employees at the University of California, Irvine. L.E. Cox was the first employee at UC Irvine, named Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance after originally setting up an office in the Irvine family home as Business and Finance Officer. H. Bradford (Brad) Atwood relocated to Orange County upon hearing that a University of California campus would be established there. After Dan Aldrich was named chancellor of UC Irvine, he appointed Atwood as the first Public Affairs Officer on May 1, 1963, eventually serving as Assistant Chancellor for University Relations (later known as University Communications). Material in the collection includes autobiographical material written by Atwood, a site dedication brochure, newspaper clippings, the first issue of the UCItems newsletter, a chronology of UC Irvine historical events written by Atwood, and records from Cox regarding development of housing and personnel on campus. All material by Atwood was given to Cox for incorporation into the University Archives at UC Irvine.
