Scope and Content of Collection

The Sarah A. Bradt Collection contains materials related to the life of Sarah Ann Bradt McKee Mood, Franklin F. Mood, and Fulmer Mood. Sarah A. Bradt was the daughter of Garrett G. Bradt, a San Diego pioneer. According to his death certificate, G. G. Bradt was born in Albany, New York in 1827. He moved to northern California in 1850 to prospect for gold. According to An Illustrated History of Southern California: … (1890) he married Sarah A. Warren nee Hood in 1857 in San Francisco and had five children. Among the children were Henry, Sarah Ann, and Horace. In 1869 the family arrived in San Diego on the side-wheeler Orizaba. That same year the New San Diego Hotel was leased to G.G Bradt and S.S. Gordon. The very next year he left the hotel business and launched a real estate business, which continued until 1877, at which time he opened Bradt & Sons, a grocery and general merchandise business. G.G. Bradt served three terms as president of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. He also served as President of the Board of Delegates of the Common Council of San Diego. Sarah Ann Bradt, daughter of G.G. Bradt, married William F. McKee in San Diego c. 1885. They had one child, E. Lila McKee (1891-1915). After William F. McKee’s death in 1922, Sarah A. Bradt McKee subsequently married Franklin Fulmer Mood in 1930. Franklin Fulmer Mood died in 1947. He had a son Fulmer Mood from a previous marriage. Fulmer Mood donated the collection in 1970. He noted in the biographical material found in Box 2, File 2 that some years earlier he had donated some Bradt family possessions found with the McKees’ household goods to the Junípero Serra Museum in San Diego. The donor also noted that he thought Franklin F. Mood’s business papers would have future value for students of the Great Depression of the 1930s to show how a property owner reacted in specific ways when he felt his property interests were in danger.
