Abstract: In April of 2020,
the Davis Downtown Business Association (DDBA) formed an art
subcommittee to launch and facilitate a communal art project that
would focus on how individuals and families were coping with the
COVID-19 pandemic and shelter-in-place mandate. The Davis
Downtown Community Art Project was one of the City of Davis's
more high profile responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, corralling
artistic and creative responses to life in quarantine from a wide
range of ages and a diversity of community members.
Physical Location: Researchers should
contact Archives and Special Collections to request collections,
as many are stored offsite.
History
In April of 2020, the Davis Downtown Business Association
(DDBA) formed an art subcommittee to launch and facilitate a
communal art project that would focus on how individuals and
families were coping with the COVID-19 pandemic and
shelter-in-place mandate. The collection of art would aim to
serve as a testament to our community's resilience.

Scope and Contents
The Davis Downtown Community Art Project was one of the City
of Davis's more high profile responses to the COVID-19 pandemic,
corralling artistic and creative responses to life in quarantine
from a wide range of ages and a diversity of community members.
The project took the form of a contest in the late spring and
early summer of 2020 in which community members from different
age groups submitted photos of artwork, creative photography, and
computer-rendered images, with the winners from each age group
determined by Facebook likes. The winning selections were made
into post cards and stickers, to support local businesses, and
several images were additionally displayed in the windows of the
old "Watermelon Music" building and creatively wrapped the newly
installed Portland Loos in the downtown business district. This
digital collection includes all submitted images, capturing a
community's personal, multifaceted, and often resilient responses
to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several entries also reflect a
commitment to social justice during the tumultuous summer of
protests following the killing of George Floyd.

This is a photo of a blue dasher dragonfly. They fly
around my backyard all summer long and I am fascinated by
their delicate beauty. They always land on this particular

have had lots of time to watch and photograph them while I
sheltered in place over the past few months. They make me
smile every day. (I used some Instagram filters on this

Mechanical pencil and ballpoint pen on a public domain
1950s map of the Davis area. I love working with maps in
portraiture because I believe the area you grew up in or
spent a significant time in greatly shapes who you are as a
person. Your internal topography is shaped by your community.
I used the quadrangles of the map to create windows into the
lives of community members. We've all been affected by recent
events different ways and cope different ways. I hope to have
made that visible.

I tied masks on these statues simply as a whimsical

suggestion to wear masks‚ in fact I masked the statues on
April 3rd three weeks before the masking order was issued by
Yolo County. I used a very old and very dirty tablecloth
turned rag. The strings were shoelaces‚ some pulled
straight out of my old running shoes. Right after the masking
order took effect one mask went missing (I replaced it). I
hope nobody ever wore it!

Acrylic painting of a Portuguese Man of War. These
creatures are generally actively avoided because of the
extremely painful sting their tentacles deliver when touched.
But what is interesting about them is that they are actually
a colony of organisms working together not a single animal.
The metaphor this conjures of working together while
maintaining safe distance is why I chose to paint this
beautiful yet dangerous specimen during the quarantine.

kids dipped their feet in paint and walked around. Then we
cut out stencils representing our family & home. The
second layer was done over stencils with hands dipped in warm

quarantine. One of them was that many kids had to celebrate
their birthdays without friends and some even without their
family. But I didn't want to make this picture very sad so I
made it bright and decorated as much as I could with very
colorful markers. This means that even during hard times we
need to look for something good and find a way out.

Sheltered In Place
2020
Creator:
Teal, Ann
Scope and Contents
"Sheltered In Place" is acrylic paint on a 10x20 canvas.
The thin yellow line is paper giftwrap ribbon glued on. I
painted this in April as the numbers of American infected and
dying from Covid-19 virus were rising daily. Because I
reacted in various ways to it during the process of
completing the painting I have purposely left the scene open
enough to enable the viewer to relate with his or her own
emotions and story.

Soccer in the Sun

Creator:
Gibson, Charis
Scope and Contents
Over distance learning our family used Coach Dad as the PE
instructor. He was able to play soccer on his lunch breaks
during COVID-19 because he was working from home. We used the
park at the end of our street Covell Park in the North Davis
Greenbelt. Shelter in Place time playing with Dad was the
inspiration for this Acrylic Painting.

This is a picture of the chalk mural that I did on the
sidewalk leading to the community green belt outside my
house. When my neighbor posted on social media that she
appreciated the artwork it made me feel special. Art has let
me remain connected to my community and helped me get through
isolation. I want to thank the City of Davis for putting on
this art contest and bringing people together. Special thanks

paintings for hospice patients at Snowline Hospice in El
Dorado County. They have been isolated due to the virus. This
is their Father's Day gift. I painted them in a period of 30
days. I am hoping to brighten their day. The paintings have
been already donated so I only have pictures of each one
now.

Starter
2020
Creator:
Gibson, Amanda
Scope and Contents
Early during Shelter in Place my neighbor shared her
sourdough starter. Bread making (and baking every other thing
that can be made with sourdough starter) has been one of my
COVID-19 pass times. I doubt that I will be able to keep up
with the demands of my edible pet once the world opens back
up to it's activities. Having time to create and having
common interests with the women on my street has been one of
the highlights of this season for me and my family.

Three Sun's
2020
Creator:
Gibson, Xavier
Scope and Contents
I have used my time over Shelter in Place to read science
fiction books and write my own science fiction short stories.
Some of the stories were for my distance learning and some
were just for fun. I like to draw comics about outer space
and think about other dimensions. This is an acrylic painting
of another planet called Three Sun's. Three Sun's is sort of
like our planet but it is not here it is only in my mind.

Victory Garden
2020
Creator:
Luckenbill, Julia
Scope and Contents
My seven year old daughter asked me to draw with her for
this project and drew a lonely little girl on the bike path
observing social distancing protocols. My drawing was to be
paired with hers a representation of her "alone together" on
her way to our vegetable garden. She is in our wheelbarrow
being pushed by my wife. I meant it to capture the things we
do as a family during this time that are both fun and
meaningful but in retrospect we still look lonely

YES
2020
Creator:
Coupe, Marsha
Scope and Contents
YES' is my favorite word. Especially in all caps like
this. Even in these precarious times racked with uncertainty
and chronic change it's important to say 'YES' more than we
say 'no'. I created this graphic using Apple's Pages
software. I made each of the nine images, shown here,
individually, then layered them to create a single collage.
Can you guess how many times the word ‘YES’ appears in
this poster?
