Biographical History

Bénoliel was born in 1888 in Tangiers, Morocco; he was educated in Paris and taught French and Hebrew in various colleges in Lisbon from 1881 to 1921; returned to Morocco in 1921, where he was active in the Jewish Community of Tangiers, serving as president for several years; was a member of various learned academies and institutes of Spain and Portugal; his major work was the Dialecto judeo-hispano-marroquí o hakitía; published in the Bóletin de la Real Academia Española, vols. XIII, XIV, XV, and XXXII (1926-52); he also published a French-Portuguese dictionary, seven volumes of original poetry, critical studies of Luiz de Camões, and numerous translations both from and into French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Hebrew, including a translation of part of The Lusiad into Hebrew; he died in 1937 in Tangiers.

Scope and Contents

Collection consists of biographical and bibliographical material, copies of published books and articles of Bénoliel and Xavier da Cunha, letters, manuscripts of published and unpublished books, notebooks, clippings, press notices, and manuscripts of other writers. In addition to Spanish, collection materials are also in Portuguese, French, Hebrew, and Arabic.
