Abstract: The UC Irvine Department of African American Studies was founded in 2016. It began as a multidisciplinary program for African
American studies within the School of Humanities, offering a minor starting in 1991, and a major in 1998. This collection
contains proposals, constitutions, and additional information on the approval for the African American Studies minor and major.
It documents planning and long range development, course development, program review, events, guest speakers, and department
administration.
