The collection was donated by Gene Kaplan in December 1996. There is no information in the collection file regarding how he acquired the photographs. He may have purchased them. On the verso of each print are the letters "KE" and a number, either 14.00, 16.00, or 24.00, which might be a price.

The Gene Kaplan photograph collection, circa 1895-1925, (SAFR 23859, P96-047) is comprised of photographs of various vessels, including freighters, passenger steamships, schooners, and tugboats, among others. The collection has been processed to the Collection level and is open for use.
Contains photographs of steam and sail vessels, circa 1895-1925. There are 14 unique photographic images in 15 physical forms (12 black-and-white photographic prints, 3 black-and-white photographic postcards, and 1 black-and-white letterpress halftone print).

  • Item 01: ALASKAN (tugboat), starboard quarter view, moored alongside a coastal steamer in an unidentified port, circa 1895. The names of the businesses in the background are all partially obscured: Pithe[?], Sweeny & [?] Printers, and [?]tern Motors. (1) black-and-white photographic print, 3.25 x 5.5 in. Vertical fold in print, partially torn at top edge.
  • Item 02: ANEIURA (schooner, 4m) anchored off an unidentified coast, port broadside view, circa 1900-1925. The masts of a four-masted bark are visible between ANEIURA and the coast. (1) black-and-white photographic print, 3.5 x 5.75 in.
  • Item 03: FORTUNA (schooner, 2m) hauled out of the water for repairs, port broadside view, circa 1900. (1) black-and-white photographic print, 3.5 x 4.75 in.
  • Item 04: GOLDEN WEST (fishing boat) hauled out of the water for repairs, view off starboard bow, circa 1925. The bow of the vessel partially in view on the right has "B188" painted on it. (1) black-and-white photographic print, 3.5 x 5.75 in.
  • Item 05: HUMBOLDT (built 1896; passenger steamship) underway, view off port bow, circa 1896-1910. (1) black-and-white photographic postcard, 3.5 x 5.5 in.
  • Item 06: HYADES (freighter) moored at Boston, Massachusetts, view off starboard bow, with other ships in the background, 1900. (1) black-and-white photographic print, 3.75 x 6 in.
  • Item 07: JOHN E. MEYER (built 1923; tugboat) towing another vessel (coal barge?), possibly in Lake Superior, view off port bow, circa 1925. (1) black-and-white photographic print, 3.75 x 6 in.
  • Item 08: NEWTON ASH (built 1925; freighter) moored dockside, view off port bow, 1925 June 11. (1) black-and-white photographic print, 3.5 x 5.75 in.
  • Item 09: TUCSON (launch?), starboard broadside view, circa 1910. (1) black-and-white photographic print, 3.75 x 5.75 in.
  • Item 10: VANDA (passenger ship) underway, view off port bow, circa 1925. The vessel is dressed. Information handwritten on verso: "Vanda - Brookline, Mass. / Length - 240' / Load water line 219' 8" / Beam 36' 4" / Draught 14' 6" / Speed 15 knots." (1) black-and-white letterpress halftone print, 4.75 x 6 in.
  • Item 11: U.S. Navy gunboat moored at an unidentified port with crew members visible on deck, starboard broadside view, circa 1925. Possibly SACRAMENTO (built 1914; gunboat; U.S. Navy). The vessel is dressed. A small launch is in the water alongside the vessel. (1) black-and-white photographic print, 16 x 20 in.
  • Item 12: Passenger steamship underway, single stack, starboard broadside view, circa 1910. Stamped on verso: "Fred Holmes & Son / Ship Brokers / Marine Building / 214 Front Street / San Francisco, Calif., U.S.A." (1) black-and-white photographic print, 3.5 x 5.75 in.
  • Item 13: Steamship underway, single stack, port broadside view, circa 1900-1920.
