Biographical / Historical
Dr. Ann Petru is a UCSF-educated physician who currently serves as Co-Director of Infectious Diseases at UCSF Benioff Children's
Hospital Oakland, where she completed her residency. Dr. Petru specializes in pediatric AIDS, as well as other infectious
diseases specific to children, such as staph and strep infections, bacterial and other forms of meningitis, Epstein-Barr virus
infection (EBV), and coccidioidomycosis. She provided care for the first pediatric AIDS patient in 1983, and since then has
worked to treat children with HIV/AIDS, and to prevent transmission of AIDS from mothers to children. In 1986, she started
the Pediatric HIV/AIDS Program and has since treated over 800 young patients. Dr. Petru has also worked to address the stigma
associated with AIDS.
