Biographical / Historical

Martin D. Burkenroad was a marine biologist who specialized in decapod crustaceans and fisheries science. Born on March 20, 1910 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Burkenroad was the only child of coffee importer David Burkenroad (J. Aron & Co.) and the artist Flora Salinger Burkenroad. He was educated at Tulane University and Yale. He worked briefly at the Carnegie Marine Biological Laboratory at Dry Tortugas and for the Louisiana Department of Conservation before attending Yale, where he stayed for many years conducting graduate research. He consulted for the governments of Panama and Costa Rica on the development of shrimp fisheries and later worked in association with Tulane University. After a brief appointment with Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Burkenroad became a research associate with the San Diego National History Museum in 1978. Burkenroad died on January 12, 1986 in La Jolla, California.
