The Shirley Kaufman papers were gifted to The Bancroft Library by Deborah and Sharon Kaufman in 2017.

Biographical sketch

Shirley Kaufman was an American-Israeli poet and translator. She grew up in Seattle, Washington and attended the University of California, Los Angeles and San Francisco State University, where she studied with Jack Gilbert. She moved to Israel in 1973. Kaufman published numerous books of poetry, many of which address issues relating to identity and immigration, violence, history, and mother-daughter relationships. Kaufman's translations of works of Israeli poets from Hebrew to English include works by Abba Kovner, Amir Gilboa, and Meir Weiseltier. Kaufman was awarded fellowships and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Society of America. She also won the Israeli President's Prize for Literature.

Shirley Kaufman's digital files were received on 5 DVD-Rs and 1 CD-R. The DVDs contained video files which were converted to .m4v files for access using the video encorder, Handbrake v.1.6.1. The audio file on the CD-R was ripped using Exact Audio Copy v.1.2.

Scope and Contents

Correspondence between Shirley Kaufman and other poets and writers; writings and materials regarding publication of poems and other writings; notebooks and journals; publicity materials; some biographical materials, including interviews and articles on Kaufman, some personal files, photos and some recordings, analog and digital, of Kaufman reading her poetry.
Digital files include digitized video and audio of poetry readings by Shirly Kaufman among other poets including Rita Dove.
