    The Earl Waggoner photographs of Navajo in Monument Valley collection was purchased from Artseal Gallery in 2002.

    Biography

    Waggoner was an award-winning amateur photographer and a student of anthropology with a fond interest in the Navajo; born in 1916 in Oakland, Calif.; spent some of his youth in Arizona, where he first developed relationships with the Navajo; lived and worked as a banker in San Francisco until 1972, when he retired to Prescott, Arizona; died in 1990.

    Scope and Content

    Includes scenes of everyday Navajo life and views of Monument Valley. Specific subjects include sand painting; blanket weaving; shepherding; a healing ceremony; food preparation; buttes and other rock formations; traditional attire; a sweat lodge; agriculture; clay grinding; horseback riding; shade houses, hogans and other structures; infants in cradleboards; and Monument Valley tour vehicles. Individuals depicted include Billy Yellow, Suzie Black, Hite Chee, Tallis Holliday, Happy Cly, Rosie Yazzie, and John Cly. Earl Waggoner is depicted in at least 2 photographs.
