Correspondence,
1949-2012
Physical Description:
5.4 Linear Feet
(13 boxes)
Scope and Content Note
Series I contains correspondence comprised mostly of letters to Huxtable requesting her coverage of a specific site or building,
advocating
the preservation of certain buildings or commenting on a previously published article. Included in this correspondence are
letters from
architects who felt compelled to pen their agreement or disagreement with what she had written about other architects, and
sometimes about
themselves. Other correspondence includes scheduling and work requests between Huxtable and her colleagues. Huxtable corresponded
with
numerous architects, politicians and scholars including Hugh Hardy, Richard Meier, Stephen Sondheim, Joel Honig, Raymond Sokolov,
Walter Muir
Whitehill and Arthur Ochs Sulzberger. Especially complimentary or important letters were filed by Huxtable in "Nice Letters."
Arrangement
Huxtable maintained two systems of arrangement, the bulk of the correspondence is arranged chronologically, but some correspondence
is
organized by subject or name. A few correspondents appear in both arrangements. Huxtable sometimes grouped correspondence
from one
correspondent and filed the group by the date of the most recent letter.

Series II.
Writing,
1934-2012, undated
Writing: 1934-2012, undated
Physical Description:
41.4 Linear Feet
(87 boxes, 2 flatfile folders)
Scope and Content Note
The material in Series II is writings by Huxtable organized in sections: newspapers and periodicals; books; lectures. Huxtable
often kept
draft versions of her writings with corrections and improvements in her hand as well as the research, illustrations, contract
papers and
related correspondence for each project. Files also typically include proofs or clippings of published writing. The bulk of
this series is
almost a complete archive of clippings from Huxtable's contribution to the
New York Times,
including her editorials, which often did not attribute her as author. Huxtable's
New York
Times
bibliography is available
here . Series II also contains the writing and research for
Classic New York the
first volume from the multivolume work
The Architecture of New York: A History and Guide
which comprises a large portion of this series as Huxtable was expecting to complete five more volumes for the publisher.
Other incomplete
writing projects found in Series II include the foreword and research for her book on ranch house style and research for a
book on extreme
architecture, which were both unpublished.
Inclusive dates for the files are usually broader in scope than publishing dates.
Selected digitized writing is available to on-site readers and Getty staff
here .
Arrangement
Items are filed alphabetically by newspaper or periodical titles and then by publishing date. Books are arranged by publishing
date. Lectures
are arranged by date of lecture delivery.

Series III.
Architect files,
1886-2012, undated
Physical Description:
28 Linear Feet
(59 boxes, 4 flatfile folders)
Scope and Content Note
Series III contains architect research files that Huxtable maintained, with documentation spanning the careers of some of
the most prominent
architects of the 20th century. The files represent her meticulous research habits of saving all materials related to a particular
architect
or firm such as publicity materials, brochures, biographical/firm files, announcements, typescripts or drafts of essays, clippings
or entire
issues of journals, letters, slide carousel lists, photographs and sometimes architectural plans. Clippings of articles by
Huxtable have been
noted.
Some of Huxtable's most robust files are for: Tadao Ando; Norman Foster; Frank Gehry; Herzog & de Meuron; Johnson & Burgee;
Le
Corbusier; Richard Meier; Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; Renzo Piano; Eero Saarinen; Skidmore Owings and Merrill; Minoru Yamasaki.
Arrangement
Architect files are in alphabetical order. Files maintain Huxtable's original order and include some subject research files
for this reason.
Firm names are filed in direct order. For each architect, projects are organized roughly chronologically with undated and
general files at the
end. Projects are assigned to firms as originally filed by Huxtable.

Series IV.
Research files,
1859-2012, undated
Physical Description:
79.7 Linear Feet
(157 boxes, 18 flatfile folders)
Scope and Content Note
Research files comprise topics of interest to Huxtable and often relate to themes explored in her published writing. While
this series
includes topical files, the focus of the research files is on subject matter related to national and international geographical
locations,
with a substantial portion devoted to New York City. Other particular locations of interest to Huxtable were Boston, Washington,
DC and Great
Britain. This series also includes files on people who are not identified primarily as architects, such as city planners,
designers or
writers. Specific cultural, academic or political institutions also included in this series are filed with the city where
those institutions
are located.
Identified typescripts of Huxtable's writings originally filed with research materials were moved to Series II. Duplicates
of identified
typescripts or clippings were retained here in their original research file.
Arrangement
Files are arranged alphabetically. International locations are filed by country and national locations are filed by city.
The files retain
Huxtable's original titles and order. For this reason older geographical name designations have been retained in the description.
