Historical or Biographical Note
SANTA MARIANA was built for Grace Line. The overall length was 547 feet with a beam of 79 feet. Gross tonnage was 14,443;
net 8,189. Service speed was 20 knots and could accommodate 175 cargo containers. In addition, 119 passengers could be carried
in first class accommodations. The ships was designed to operate between New York and Guayaquil, Ecuador " the principle homeward
cargo being bananas.
In 1969, the Grace Line fleet was sold to Prudential Line and shortly thereafter the SANTA MARIANA was transferred to the
Caribbean itinerary and operated as a 12-passenger freighter. The ports were not equipped to handle containers and prospects
for continuing employment looked bleak.
In 1972, the ship was transferred to Prudential Line's West Coast service and after complete refurbishing began to make 60
day voyages from San Francisco around South America and return. Ownership of much of Prudential's fleet had passed to Delta
Line as charters. In 1983, Delta Line was sold to Crowley Maritime.
The SANTA MARIANA continued in service until late 1984 when she was laid up.
