Biography
Manuel Fernandez-Alemany earned a bachelor's and master's degree in anthropology from the University of Southern California
(USC) and a PhD from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). His areas of research include musicology and sociology.
Fernandez-Alemany published two books on homosexual male culture,
Mariquitas y Marimachos published in 1999, which he wrote in collaboration with Andres Sciolla while studying under Sciolla at UCSD, and
Heterogender Homosexuality in Honduras published in 2002, which he wrote in collaboration with Stephen Murray. Written in a question/answer format,
Mariquitas y Marimachos provides answers to common misconceptions about homosexuality, including misconceptions about AIDS (la SIDA) in the Hispanic
community.
Heterogender Homosexuality in Honduras is an anthropological study of the sexual culture of transexual women and of men who identify as homosexual or who identify
as heterosexual but have sexual encounters with men in Honduras.

Scope and Contents
This collection includes the transcripts and tapes of the interviews and incident reports that appear in Fernandez's book,
Heterogender Homosexuality in Honduras, published in 2002. It also includes the proofs, publishers contract, and correspondence and notes related to his book,
Mariquitas y Marimachos, published in 1999. The collection documents Fernandez's studies, his masters dissertation, and his directed research project.
There are also slides of presentations on international music and musical performances, and tapes of his interviews in Honduras
and on subjects including machismo and the documentary
Paris is Burning.
