Biographical / Historical
Women's Intercollegiate Athletics began as a separate department at UC Berkeley in 1976-77 with 12 sports. Its development
followed the enactment of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which led colleges and universities nationwide to
search for ways to generate greater equity within women's intercollegiate athletics. In 1973, Barbara Hoepner was appointed
acting coordinator Women's Intercollegiate Sports at Berkeley, and a Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics
for women was formed. The department, established three years later, had its own director and was separate from the Department
of Men's Intercollegiate Athletics. Luella Lilly was hired as its chair and reported directly to the vice chancellor for administration.
