    Scope and Contents

Quartet, a collaboration among artists, is a limited edition fine press book. It contains four essays from the collected works of Lewis Thomas; each essay is accompanied by an original water color etching by Joseph Goldyne commissioned especially for the edition.
Lewis Thomas and Joseph Goldyne first met in 1985. Two men trained in the sciences as medical doctors discovered much in common in their respective accomplishments as author and artist. The profound respect they share for the connection between scientific and humanistic pursuits became the central theme from which Quartet was to develop.
This archive shows the progression of images of each etching for Quartet from the first proofs to the final images. In some instances, preliminary monotypes and alternative impressions are present. The final images are mounted with the first page of each essay to reveal the refinement of design between text page and etching. Uniquely colored versions of the final images, done as monoprints after the book's completion, provide further insight into the book's creative process - Dr. Goldyne inspired Dr. Thomas' essays.
Quartet, as its title intimates, evokes both music and poetry, reiterating to its readers the deep humanism and love of life that are a signature for Lewis Thomas' writings. Quartet was published in the Fall of 1986 by Charles Hobson, the founder of Pacific Editions, in an edition limited to 165 copies.
