Abstract: This collection contains memorandums,
correspondence, bulletins, minutes, administrative records, and other materials pertaining
to California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) from the mid 1960s through the early
2000s. Materials were collected by Arthur E. Nelson, the first College Librarian at CSUSB,
and provide a snapshot into the early history of the university.

Collection Scope and Content Summary
This collection contains memorandums, correspondence, bulletins, minutes, administrative
records, and other materials pertaining to California State University, San Bernardino
(CSUSB) that were collected by Arthur E. Nelson, the first College Librarian at CSUSB. The
included materials date back to the mid-1960s when the university was known as California
State College, San Bernardino (C.S.C.S.B) and continues through 2003. Coverage includes the
university's administration, academic and faculty senates, academic and non-academic
departments, president's office, library, faculty, students, and alumni providing a snapshot
into the early history of the university from the 1960s through 1980s.
Biographical Note
Arthur E. Nelson was appointed the first College Librarian at CSUSB on April 1, 1963.
Nelson's title was later changed to Library Director in 1972, a post he would hold until
March 31, 1988 when he returned to the ranks as Librarian. As the longest tenured library
director in the California State University system, Nelson oversaw the growth of the CSUSB
library for more than two decades and was instrumental in building the library's initial
50,000 volume collection. He was also responsible for establishing this collection of
materials which would serve as a starting point for the University Archives which were later
named in his honor. Nelson fully retired from the university in 1991 and later passed away
on September 25, 2003 at the age of 76.

The original order of this collection was maintained and the originally assigned file
identifiers and descriptions were used. Materials are arranged by file identifier into the
following nine series:
