Biographical / Historical
Charles F. Manahan (1871-1955) was a first sergeant with the 34th Infantry Regiment, U.S.
Volunteers during the Philippine-American War from 1899 to 1902. Manahan collected military
records, correspondence, and papers dealing particularly with the 34th Infantry Regiment
during that action.
Scope and Contents
A collection of approximately 320 items from 1898 to 1946, it consists of military records,
correspondence, papers, and ephemera of the 34th Infantry Regiment, U.S. Volunteers, active
during the Philippine-American War, 1899 to 1902. The correspondence includes that of
General Julius Augustus Penn, commander of the regiment. The collection also contains a
small group of letters related to World War II.
Related Materials
In 1956, approximately 56 books, scrapbooks, and printed maps were transferred to the Rare
Books Department; approximately 300 slides, stereopticons, and photographs were transferred
to the Photo Archives (photCL 425).
