Abstract: Collection includes the papers of Terry Henderling (1941–2020), a gay activist. Henderling was one of the co-founders of the
Gay Democratic Club (later called the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club) and the GLBT Historical Society. He worked on Harvey
Milk’s 1977 campaign and as a community adviser during Milk’s administration. The collection includes photographic slides,
photographs, newspaper clippings, ephemera, personal papers and correspondence. Slides and photograph topics include: LGBTQ
Bay Area events (including Pride, Castro Street Fair, Haight Street Fair and others), political demonstrations, Harvey Milk’s
campaign and memorial events, San Francisco neighborhoods and sites, vacations, and other personal photographs. Some slides
and photographs are credited to Jim Gordon.

Biography/Administrative History
Terry Henderling (1941–2020) was a gay activist involved in queer Democratic organizing in the Bay Area in the 1970s and 1980s.
He was a co-founder of the Gay Democratic Club — later renamed to the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club — as well as the GLBT
Historical Society. Henderling worked on Harvey Milk’s 1977 campaign and as a community adviser during Milk’s administration.
He also briefly served as custodian of Milk’s materials before they were transferred to the GLBT Historical Society in the
1990s. Henderling thoroughly documented queer Bay Area events throughout the 1980s, including Pride, Castro Street Fair, and
various drag performances. He also traveled extensively throughout the western United States with his colleague and companion,
Jim Gordon.
