    Biographical / Historical

Sallie McQuiston was born January 20, 1843. She lived in Israel Township, Preble, Ohio. Bower and McQuiston were cousins by marriage; Sallie's father, David McQuiston, married Bower's aunt, Margaret Hamilton, when Sallie was 7. Sallie wrote these letters at the age of 22 when she was living in Hopewell, Ohio. She married Joseph S. Ramsey on Christmas Day 1866.
The second letter writer, Martha Frances "Frank" Warden was born September 3, 1848. She was raised by her grandfather, Hugh Ramsey and her aunt Sarah Ramsey, which is why in her letter she is unwilling to leave her grandfather and travel west with Bower until after her grandfather's death. They lived in the same town as McQuiston for the majority of the war, Israel Township, Ohio. Frank and Bower married on February 22, 1866 and moved to Iowa where they had nine children. Frank passed away in 1920.
The reciepient, Andrew Bower Rock was born December 18, 1837 in Fairhaven, Ohio. He enlisted in the 47th Ohio Regiment of the Union Army in July of 1861. He fought in the battles of Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, and Lookout Mountain, and he later joined Sherman's destructive March to the Sea through Atlanta. He was mustered out in February 1865, but he immediately reenlisted and was finally honorably discharged in August 1865 at the end of the war. He passed away just two years after his wife in 1922.
