Scope and Content

Large album contains 103 early black-and-white photographs, with handwritten captions in German, of Iraq and Iran. Images feature scenic views of palm trees, rivers, mountains; men on horseback and with pack camels, nomadic peoples, beggars, sheiks, barbers, peddlers, Persian honor guard assigned to the German consul; views from the river, boats on the Tigris; mosques, the Sultan's residence in Iraq, German consulate in Iran, Persian fortresses, tombs, ruins at Babylon, and other notable monuments; bird's-eye views of towns, city gates and arches, bazaars; and one large group shot of men and women, presumably staff and spouses of the German consulate. Locations include Basrah, Babylon, Feludja, Musayyib, Hillah, Karbala, Baghdad (Iraq); Bushehr, Dezful, Tehran (Iran). Album most likely belonged to a member of the German consulate.
