Biography / Administrative History

The Mount Olive Baptist Church was founded by Rev. George Johnson Jr. on February 11, 1963. Rev. Johnson studied at the Berkeley Baptist Divinity School and the Western Baptist Bible College in El Cerrito and received some of his training as a pastor at Allen Temple Baptist Church. Johnson was the first African-American to organize a Baptist church in Hayward, California.
The church held its first meeting on February 11, 1963 at the home of Mrs. Elnora Jones. Several weeks later, on March 3, founding members participated in their first service at Founder's Savings and Loan Association. The group moved its services to Pioneer Savings and Loan Association on March 17. Installation of officers occurred on December 8, 1963 and was officiated by Rev. E.J. Price. The church found a permanent building on April 19, 1964, when it moved to 2905 Kelly St. in Hayward, California.
