Abstract: This collection contains 54 documents kept by Sidney A. Shepperd, secretary of the Owego Mining Company and railroad ticket
agent
for the Denver & Rio Grande/Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. The material is chiefly related to the
Owego Mining Company, which operated primarily on two lodes near Georgetown, Colorado, and gives a good picture of the operation
of a small-time mining venture and the holdings
of a Denver businessman (Shepperd) during the Colorado mining boom years in the late 19th century.

Scope and Content
This collection
consists of the papers of the Owego Mining Company's secretary, and ticket agent at Grand Union
Station in Denver for the Denver & Rio Grande and Atchison, Topeka, & Santa
Fe Railroads, Sidney A. Shepperd (also spelled Shepard and Sheppard in various
documents in the collection). The two items of Shepperd's personal correspondence in
the collection indicate that he was also a member of the Colorado National Guard and
the Grand Army of the Republic (a fraternal organization for Union Civil War
veterans).
The collection consists of a variety of stock certificates, notarized mining
documents, meeting minutes and resolutions, a returns ledger, business
correspondence relating to the daily business of the Owego Mining Company, a certificate of
widowhood from the Fraternal Order of Masons, and two pieces of personal
correspondence relating to S.A. Shepperd's military service. They give a good
picture of the operation of a small-time mining venture and the holdings of a Denver
businessman (Shepperd) during the Colorado mining boom years. Shepperd's
correspondence with miners and other capitalists, as well as the documents relating
to his business deals with mining companies in Nevada and New Mexico, attest to the
networks of capital that linked Colorado silver mining to other mining boom
districts and other industries. Many of Shepperd's documents are penned on the
letterhead of the Denver & Rio Grande/Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad,
much of which includes promotional copy advertising the railroad's tourist routes.
