    Historical Note

These posters reflect the shifting priorities of the Chinese government from the 1960s through the 1980s, including the promotion of Cultural Revolution-era political movements, agricultural modernization, efforts to raise the social standing of women, the relative opening of society under Deng Xiaoping, and the cult of personality around Party leadership. Some of them are fairly straightforward didactic tools, while others represent sophisticated efforts to express ideological points through artwork that was sufficiently appealing to be displayed willingly in people's residences.
