    Acquisition Information

    SAFR-00751
According to the Accession Receiving Report, "These prints were originally found in a suitcase given to the seller at a garage sale and purchased by Stephen Canright for the NMMA [National Maritime Museum Association] to donate to SAFR [San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park]" in 1993.
The March 2009 issue of "Inside news from your Port of Anacortes," page 2, (http://www.portofanacortes.com/documents/port_news_march_09.pdf) features a photograph that is also found in P93-061 (Item 7). The newsletter states that the photograph was one of four sent electronically to the Port of Anacortes in Anacortes, Washington, by Magne Hungnes, a Norwegian, who wrote that the photographs were found among his uncle's possessions. He believed them to be from 1925. He also wrote that the crew was mostly Scandinavian, about 18 men total, with 10 dories. It is unclear from the newsletter whether Mr. Hungnes' uncle sailed on the vessel or how he might have acquired them.

    Historical or Biographical Note

FANNY DUTARD (built 1882; schooner, 3m) was built by C.G. White in San Francisco, California. "She was owned by B. C. Genereaux and later by Hans Madison of San Francisco, and in 1905 was bought by J.A. Matheson of Anacortes, Wash., and put in the Bering Sea codfishery. She was withdrawn in 1918 in favor of the off-shore lumber and copra trade, but resumed fishing the next year. Her last voyage was in 1930; then she was laid up for a time in Lake Union, Seattle, but has operated recently [circa 1941] as a barge by the Ketchikan Packing Co." Source: Lyman, John. "Pacific Coast-Built Sailers, 1850-1905." The Marine Digest, April 12, 1941.
