Alfred M. Boyce was born in Maryland on May 2, 1901. He attended St. John's College for one year in 1919 before working as a crewman on a number of ocean liners and freighters. He went back to school in 1923, attending Cornell University for his bachelor's and master's degrees.
In 1927 Boyce received a position at the Citrus Experiment Station in Riverside working on entomological research, and earned his doctorate in entomology from UC Berkeley in 1931. Boyce became Head of the Division of Entomology of the Citrus Experiment Station in 1940, and rose to be the Director of the Citrus Research Center and Agricultural Experiment Station in the 1960s. In 1960, Boyce also became Dean of UC Riverside's new College of Agriculture. He retired from the university in 1968, and passed away in June of 1997.
During his lifetime Boyce developed a national and international reputation for his work in the field of entomology, and received awards from numerous groups and societies. In 1977 the UC Riverside Deparment of Entomology established the Al Boyce Lecture Series, followed by the Alfred M. Boyce Chair in 1984.
