Social work and writings prior to law degree 1929-1998 1948-1979

Scope and Contents

This series contains research and writings from Fertig's career prior to receiving his Juris Doctor (JD) degree from UCLA in May of 1979. A small amount of autobiographical writings in this series were created after 1979, but these focus on Fertig's earlier career-- such as Fertig's manuscripts for his 1998 work titled, "Searching for Justice in Chicago." Material dates from 1929 to 1998, with the bulk spanning 1948 to 1979. See also the Freedom Riders series for any documentation of Fertig's participation in the Freedom Riders group of civil rights activists of the 1960s and the USC School of Social Work series for papers from this time that Fertig kept for reference in his office.

Scope and Contents

This series contains editions of HLP newsletters, correspondence, administrative records, research relating to Kurdistan, and legal proceedings and briefs from cases involving HLP. The bulk of this material was created in the 1990s while Fertig served as HLP's president. One case that is well-documented in this series, Humanitarian Law Project, et al. v. Janet Reno, et al., was a federal court case concerning the rights of people in the United States to provide material support to organizations classified by the U.S. Government as engaged in terrorist activities. The Sri Lanka-based Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) were specific organizations concerned in this case.
