Scope and Content of Collection

The first album documents family life in Hobart, California (March 1907), Verdi, Nevada (1909) and Portola, CA (1910). There are numerous photographs taken around their home in Portola and in the town. The last section of the album shows son Frank McCullough on the Western Pacific diesel locomotive No. 501 in 1942. The headlight on the locomotive has a hood along with the switch stand lamp also in the picture. There are also several generic locomotives shown plowing deep snow. The second album starts in 1912 where the first album left offf. There are lots of photos of family and friends and neighbors in this album. There are several photos of interest in this second album: One photo shows "three tunnels at once on W. P." These tunnels are known as the "Honeymoon" tunnels. Another photo shows the interior of the Western Pacific shop at Portola in 1915. There is a photo of Portola across the river from 1911. This photo was taken from the north side of the river looking south toward the two story depot. There are postcards showing Donner Lake from the Summit which shows the original wagon road over the summit, a view of Elko, Nevada, and a postcard showing the Humboldt River flooding the town of Winnemucca, Nevada. Other noteworthy postcards and photos are the Donner Summit bridge, Lodi in 1924, the Municipal Baths at Stockton, a Carson City, Nevada church and school, Elko, Nevada County courthouse, and the Hotel Del Monte fire of 1924.
