[Identification of item], Astronomy Department. Publications (University Archives Record Series 187). UCLA Library Special
Collections, University Archives.
The Department of Astronomy at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has its origins in the 1922 appointment of
Frederick C. Leonard, an astronomer, to the Department of Mathematics. In 1931, a separate Department of Astronomy was created.
The initial focus of the department was on meteoritics, followed by celestial mechanics, and interplanetary navigation. In
the 1950s, the department expanded to include instruction in stellar astronomy and astrophysics.
The Department of Astronomy is now the Department of Physics and Astronomy with a Division of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
The Division of Astronomy and Astrophysics has research areas in astroparticle physics, stellar astronomy, galactic astronomy,
extragalactic astronomy, cosmology, space sciences, infrared astronomy, solar physics, and astrobiology. Centers and research
groups include the SOFIA Airborne Observatory, the Galactic Group Center, the Center for Adaptive Optics, and the Infrared
Laboratory. In addition to the planetarium located on the UCLA campus, the Lick Observatory at Mount Hamilton, the Keck Observatory
at Mauna Kea, and the Solar Observatory on Mount Wilson are all used for research and observation.
Record Series 187 contains publications of UCLA's Astronomy Department. Files include both astronomical papers generated by
the Department, and publications and bulletins generated by the Lick Observatory. These publications predate the department's
involvement with the observatory.
This is an inactive record series; no additional University records are expected to be added.
