    Historical or Biographical Note

The Type C3 was a series of general purpose cargo ships designed by the United States Maritime Commision and were built between 1939 and 1947.
The Type C3 ship was the third type of cargo ships designed by the United States Maritime Commission (MARCOM) in the late 1930's. The primary design of the C3 was as a multipurpose ship, not created specifically for any particular service or trade route. At 492 ft long and 69.5 feet wide and with a 28.5 foot draft, 7,800 gross tons and 12,000 deadweight tons, with 5 independent cargo holds, its main propulsion turbine developed 8,500 horsepower with a top speed of 16.5 knots. A total of 465 of these general purpose cargo ships were built between 1939 and 1947, and were used by the following commercial maritime companies: American Export Lines; Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock; Seas Shipping; American South African Line; United States Maritime Service; Four Aces; American President Lines; and Moore-McCormack Lines. In addition to the C3's success as a platform for commercial applications, many C3s were converted to military uses during World War II, particularly as escort aircraft carriers and as tenders for destroyers, submarines and seaplanes. As it had done with the Type C2 ships, MARCOM distributed operating and maintenance manuals for the crew's use.
