    Biography

    James Wong Howe was a Chinese-born cinematographer active in Hollywood from 1920 to 1975. He received Academy Awards for photographing THE ROSE TATTOO (1955) and HUD (1963).

    Collection Scope and Content Summary

    The James Wong Howe papers span the years 1915-1991 (bulk 1932-1975) and encompass 12.8 linear feet. The collection consists of scripts, some correspondence, article manuscripts, an oral history, radio broadcast transcripts, biographical and publicity material, scrapbooks, and photographs. Sixty-five of Howe's films are represented in the photograph series. There are also biography, family, general subject, portraits, and travel photographs. Of particular interest are pictures taken by Howe on trips to China in 1929 and 1948.
