Abstract: This collection primarily consists of subject files and other material related to the business operations of the Point Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Stewart Brand and Richard "Dick" Raymond, as well as material related to Whole Earth and CoEvolution Quarterly publications and "The Whole Eath Truck Store" (a precursor to the Whole Earth Catalog). The subject files contain correspondence, budgets, reports, and memoranda, as well as some ephemera and photographs. The collection also contains notebooks and ledgers, clippings, serial publications, and microfilm and microfiche.

Conditions Governing Access

Box 23 and 24 are closed until 2050. The rest of the collection is open for research, with the exception of the born-digital materials, which are closed until processed. Note that material must be requested at least 36 hours in advance of intended use.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection was given by Danica Remy to Stanford University, Special Collections in 2014.

Arrangement

As there was no discernable original order, the collection was arranged into the following series based on format/type: Point Foundation Subject Files, Notebooks and Ledgers, Clippings and Articles, Publications, and Microfilm/Microfiche. The majority of the subject files had creator-supplied titles, which have been retained.

Biographical / Historical

The Point foundation was a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco and founded by Stewart Brand and Richard "Dick" Raymond, growing out of their work with the Portola Institute and the Whole Earth Catalog. Point was conceived from the profits of The Last Whole Earth Catalog and was dedicated to perpetuating the energies and ideals of the catalog, including environmentalism, sustainability, and innovation. Formed in 1971, it distributed more than $800,000 in small grants. These grants were chosen by individual Point directors for "relatively active purposes affecting issues of economic, environmental, sociological, and behavioral importance." Board members at various times included Raymond and Brand as well as Huey Johnson (Nature Conservancy), Jerry Mander ("radical ad-man"), Bill English (Xerox) and Michael Phillips (Glide Church). As its non-profit owner, Point later published works related to the Whole Earth Catalog. It was also a co-owner of The WELL (Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link) one of the oldest virtual communities in operation.

Biographical / Historical

Danica Remy is a prominent Silicon Valley executive and president of Point Foundation. A key player at the center of developing internet services, also Danica served as Vice President of The WELL and helped found Global Business Network, a scenario planning consultancy for Fortune 500 companies. She also serves on the boards of Network for Good, Long Now Foundation, and Asteroid Foundation.

Scope and Contents

The majority of this collection consists of subject files pertaining to various grant projects funded by the Point Foundation, as well as general orginzational files. These files consist of corresspondence, reports, memoranda, meeting minutes, budget and expense lists, ephemera and memorabilia, and photographs. Also contained in this collection are notebooks and ledgers, clippings and articles regarding Stewart Brand and Whole Earth Catalog, serial publications, and microfilm and microfiche.
