Description
The Kenneth W. Payne Research Archive (DOC1989.1) contains research Payne conducted from 1972 to 1985 on the traditional medical practices of the Bagobo people of Mindanao, Philippines, including diseases, symptoms, treatments and cures; healer and patient relationships; and nutrition. Based on 1974-1976 field trips to Mindanao, Payne's dissertation entitled "The Sulphur Eaters: Illness, its Ritual, and the Social Order among the Tagabawa Bagobos of Southcentral Mindanao, Philippines" was completed April 1985.
Background
Kenneth William Payne (November 14, 1950 - November 13, 1988) was a medical anthropologist, B.A. New York University in 1972, Ph.D. in anthropology University of California, Berkeley in 1985. Payne taught in the Departments of Anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis and the State University of New York, Purchase. He also worked as a researcher in the Department of Medicine at University of California, San Francisco, until his diagnosis of AIDS in 1985. Throughout his career, Payne strongly advocated for LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and others) concerns. In 1981, Payne began researching the socio-cultural aspects of human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) as a new disease. In 1982, Payne co-founded the Metropolitan St. Louis Task Force on AIDS with Sandra T. Spirtas while he was a visiting professor at the Department of Anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis. Payne, along with his collaborator Stephen O. Murray, wrote a series of letters and articles to bring the concerns of HIV/AIDS to the field of anthropology. As a patient with AIDS, Payne noted that he had the opportunity to learn “more than he ever wanted to know'' about the doctor-patient relationship in the treatment of AIDS. Payne died of AIDS on November 13, 1988. In his memory the Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists (SOLGA), now the Association for Queer Anthropology (AQA), named their annual undergraduate student prize after him.
