Biographical / Historical
Gay and Lesbian United Employees (GLUE) was founded in 1991 to support gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals
employed by the City of Los Angeles, affiliated through the office of the City Clerk. The organization promoted itself as
a support mechanism for employees contending with on the job issues related to their sexual orientation. In addition, GLUE's
board members planned activities that generally fell into several categories:
- Educational: ranging from sessions with guest speakers talking about issues of interest to GLUE's membership to community
outreach with the Mayor's Task Force or police advisory groups.
- Political Events: Appeared to have focused around election debates with topics that were relevant to GLUE's membership.
- Social Gatherings/Mixers: Consisted of holiday/seasonal parties, informal work week luncheons, and informal meetings with
other city outreach groups/LGBT organizations.
- Special Events: Included staffing booths promoting GLUE at community events, such as the annual Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade/Festival,
the Sunset Junction Street Fair, and other events as planned by the Board of Directors.
In 1999, GLUE had 20 members. However, starting in 2000, the organization's membership began to decrease as members retired
or otherwise became disengaged from GLUE's activities. In August 2000, they recorded 3 vacancies on their 9-member board.
Event participation also began to decline around that time. By 2002, GLUE's board decided discontinue regularly scheduled
meetings and have them on an as-needed basis. In 2006, Madaleine Renee, a longtime co-chair of GLUE, retired from the City
of Los Angeles after thirty-six years; her presence was no doubt a major part of GLUE. The last documented instance of any
GLUE event or meeting in these records is in 2009.
