    Abstract: Ruth Ragan was born in Indiana in 1884 and died in San Diego in 1969. She spent many years in Japan with the YWCA before taking a job working for the director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, San Diego. She subsequently became the librarian at Scripps. Her enthusiasm for Shakespeare was kindled by performances by the Old Globe Players at the replica of the famed Globe Theatre in England that was built for the1935 California Pacific International Exposition in San Diego. During the period 1958-62 she donated this collection and 550 volumes to the San Diego Public Library.
