    Abstract: This is the first of four volumnes of diaries of Charles P Kimball covering the time period from January 1839 to December 1842. It is the daily record of a young man, 18 years old at the beginning, living on a farm outside of Bangor, Maine. The entries record his daily activites at the farm and in school in some detail. The second volume of the diaries (C058765) covers the time period from December 1844 to August 1845. He is still living and working on the farm and also attends school at Bridgeton, Massachusetts. He also is trained to be a carriagemaker. The third volume of the diaries (C058766) run from September 1845 to June 1846. He describes his time at Bridgeton and of moving to Boston. There he attempts to start a carriage making business. The fourth volume covers from June 1846 to January 1848. The daily record includes weather reports, poetry, meetings and business. He travels to various towns in Massachusetts and plans to open a carriage making shop in Norway, Ma.

    Biographical / Historical

    Charles P. Kimball was born 07/11/1821 in Bangor, Maine. His journey to California took place aboard the "Boston" and arrived in San Francisco 07/06/1849. In San Francisco he ran a shop "The Noisy Carrier Publishing Hall", located on the Long Wharf in San Francisco, which had the largest variety of out of town papers in the city. He became a member of the Vigilance Committee, The Society of California Pioneers, the Mechanics' Institute, and Yerba Buena Lodge, No. 15, I.O.O.F.. He was also the owner of "The Noisy Carrier Book and Stationery Co." He was the publisher of the first San Francisco Directory in 1850
